In an interview with Sky Sports, Villa forward Watkins expressed his desire to be a member of an England squad traveling to a major tournament. 🗣 “I’d like to go to the World Cup.” Ollie Watkins discusses how this season is crucial for him as he prepares for the 2022 World Cup. August 4, 2022 — Football Daily (@footballdaily) “I want to play in the World Cup because it’s a huge major tournament,” he said. “I grew up watching England in World Cups, and it would be a proud moment for my family and me.” Image courtesy of Visionhaus/Getty Images. Watkins has already earned seven England caps and two goals, despite missing out on the European Championships last summer. England captain Harry Kane is likely to lead the Three Lions’ attack on his own, but there are spots available to serve as his backup this winter. Watkins is desperate for a call-up to the England squad. Aside from Kane, England has been lacking in consistent forwards for some time. Dominic Calvert-Lewin was hampered by injuries last season and has already been ruled out of the season opener against Chelsea. Patrick Bamford is another player who will be throwing his hat into the ring after a difficult season. Neville Williams/Aston Villa FC photo courtesy of Getty Images Watkins understands that his club form is crucial in the build-up to the tournament, and he hopes to play against some of his Villa teammates: “I’d love to be playing against some teammates, it would be a dream come true.” Obviously, I need to concentrate on my club form and perform well.” Villa have strengthened in a number of areas this summer, but centre-forward isn’t one of them, with manager Steven Gerrard putting his trust in Watkins, Danny Ings, and young forward Cameron Archer. Gerrard has previously praised Watkins and compared him to one of his former teammates: “He’s a lovely player on the eye with the goals he scores and his technical ability.” In many ways, he reminds me of Fernando Torres. Ollie possesses that physical presence and physique.” Do you have anything to say about this article?
