Barcelona is playing a risky game by continuing to spend money on summer signings despite being in debt to the tune of more than £1 billion.
The latest big-money arrivals at the Nou Camp are Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha, with deals for Sevilla’s Jules Kounde and Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva also in the works.
Given the spending spree, Barcelona may look to offload a number of players before the transfer deadline, with Manchester United and Chelsea interested in Dutch international De Jong.
Xavi regards De Jong as a “key player” at Barcelona, but admits that the club’s financial situation may force a decision on his future.
‘We’ve had private conversations that are very important, which I will not reveal here,’ Xavi said following Barcelona’s 1-0 win over Real Madrid in La Liga on Sunday.
‘He’s an important player, but there’s also the economic situation and Financial Fair Play.’

De Jong was named to the bench for Barcelona’s most recent pre-season friendly, and he came on at halftime to play in defense.
When asked if playing De Jong as a defender was a message to him, Xavi replied, ‘I am not sending messages to anyone.’ ‘As a player, I really like him.’ He can give us a lot as a centre-back because he can adapt to that position. ‘We want the centre-back to distribute the ball effectively.’
Manchester United have been linked with a summer move for De Jong, but the 25-year-old would prefer to stay at Barcelona.
Erik ten Hag, the manager of Manchester United, previously worked with De Jong at Ajax and is eager to bring him to Old Trafford, having already signed Christian Eriksen, Tyrell Malacia, and Lisandro Martinez.
Chelsea have also expressed interest in signing De Jong as Thomas Tuchel seeks to improve on last season’s third-place finish in the Premier League.
Meanwhile, Xavi was pleased with Barcelona’s performance against Real Madrid, telling reporters: ‘Here there are no friendlies, only opportunities, especially against Madrid.’
We want to win, we want to compete, and we could have ended the game, but I saw a lot of good things.’
We can improve, even though our physical level is still in pre-season. ‘I am overjoyed with my feelings following the victory.’
‘Raphinha made the difference, he is dynamic and he can play on both wings,’ Xavi said of his new signings.
Robert [Lewandowski] is a world-class star who quickly adapted. I’m pleased because the new players will provide early competition, forcing everyone to wake up quickly.’ MORE: ‘There’s no doubt about it,’ Eden Hazard believes his Real Madrid teammate should win the Ballon d’Or.
