Photographer: Jeff Curry/USA TODAY Sports On Thursday, the St. Louis Cardinals will try to complete a series sweep of the Colorado Rockies and extend their recent home-field dominance. The Cardinals won the first two games of the three-game series, 5-4 and 5-1, respectively. They have won 12 of their last 13 home games, improving to 39-21 at Busch Stadium this season. St. Louis has won 14 of its last 18 games to take a three-game lead in the National League Central over the Milwaukee Brewers. “Everyone is clicking right now,” Cardinals rookie second baseman Nolan Gorman said after his three-RBI performance on Wednesday. “We’re on our way.” The Rockies have now lost three consecutive games and 12 of their last 17. Adam Wainwright (8-8, 3.27 ERA) will take the mound for the Cardinals on Thursday after pitching a no-hitter into the seventh inning against Milwaukee on Saturday. “I had good stuff and a good plan,” he explained. “I was doing a good job. Everything was under my control. I was determined to throw a no-hitter. I truly did. I thought it was going to be the night from the first inning on.” In nine innings, Wainwright limited the Brewers to one run on three hits while striking out eight. Milwaukee eventually won 3-2 after 10 innings. “Going nine was a really nice job,” Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said. “He struck out every leadoff batter in every inning.” That is the most efficient you can be.” In 17 career appearances, including 13 starts, Wainwright is 11-1 with a 1.48 ERA against the Rockies. He did not face them in Denver last week, when Colorado won two of three games against St. Louis. Charlie Blackmon (8-for-21, three doubles, triple, homer, two walks, two RBIs), C.J. Cron (2-for-5, two doubles, walk, RBI), and Brendan Rodgers (2-for-3, homer, two RBIs) have all performed admirably against Wainwright. The Rockies will respond with Antonio Senzatela (3-6, 4.67 ERA), who will be looking for his first win since June 19. Senzatela has met the quality-start metric in four consecutive starts, allowing 11 runs in 25 2/3 innings (3.86 ERA). In seven career starts against the Cardinals, he is 2-3 with a 5.11 ERA. Senzatela has struggled with Tyler O’Neill (5-for-7, two doubles, homer, three RBIs), Paul Goldschmidt (7-for-20, two doubles, two homers, eight RBIs), Paul DeJong (5-for-12, double, two RBIs), and Tommy Edman (5-for-12, double, two RBIs) (2-for-7, double, triple, two RBIs). The Cardinals are in the thick of the playoff race, while the Rockies are last in the NL West. They are attempting to maintain their competitive spirit while enduring a lost season. “You want to try to win every game,” said Rockies pitcher Kyle Freeland. “Looking at the record and where we are in the standings, it’s a tough pill to swallow.” Regardless, we’ll be there every day to try to win a baseball game.” -Media at the Field Level
