Chelsea are turning their attention towards Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries amid their failed move for Jules Kounde

According to reports, Chelsea are now interested in Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries after their failed move for Jules Kounde. After failing to sign Kounde last year, Thomas Tuchel’s side has spent the majority of the summer pursuing him from Sevilla. They quickly renewed their interest in the centre-back ahead of the upcoming season, but they faced stiff competition from Barcelona for his signature, and it now appears that he is on his way to the Camp Nou. Chelsea’s pursuit of the 23-year-old has reportedly come to a halt, with Kounde now set to join Barcelona from Sevilla. As a result, the Blues will have to focus on other targets for the remainder of the window as they continue to rebuild their defense. The Blues have been linked with Milan Skriniar, Presnel Kimpembe, and Josko Gvardiol, but new reports suggest they may target a different player this summer. Denzel Dumfries joined Inter Milan in the summer of 2018. (Alamy) Tuchel’s side are’switching focus’ to Inter’s Dumfries, according to the Evening Standard. According to reports, the Italian club, who re-signed Romelu Lukaku on loan from Chelsea earlier this season, will need to sell one of their key players this summer. Chelsea have looked into Skriniar, but Paris Saint-Germain are also interested in the Slovakian international, and Inter have received offers for Dumfries, who they would prefer to sell. Manchester United is also said to be interested in the 26-year-old. Chelsea’s interest has also been reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, with the west London club making ‘fresh contact’ with Dumfries’ current club to ascertain his availability. Inter would demand at least €40 million for the Dutch international, who Tuchel desired to include in a deal for Lukaku. Dumfries joined Serie A from PSV last year, following an impressive Euro 2020 campaign with the Netherlands. He made 45 appearances for the team in all competitions, scoring five goals and providing seven assists from right wing-back. He could become Chelsea’s third summer signing, following Raheem Sterling and Kalidou Koulibaly to Stamford Bridge. Tuchel commented on the need for squad improvements following their 4-0 pre-season loss to Arsenal, saying, “The season analysis does not change because of this game.” Unfortunately, it proved my point, as has the last week.” I would prefer not to be right, and I did everything I could to prove myself wrong, but looking back at the previous season and the parts of the game where we struggled and how we struggled, I believe I was correct.” We were sanctioned, and players left; we know that some players are attempting to leave, and this is where we are. We had an urgent call for quality players, and there were a lot of them. We have two quality players, without a doubt, but we are not competitive like this, as we can see today.”
