After Barcelona’s opening workout of their preseason tour in Miami, Florida, Ronald Araujo spoke with the media about a variety of subjects, including the club’s progress under Xavi Hernandez and the recent additions to the roster. Barcelona has already added a number of players to their roster this summer, and Robert Lewandowski is the newest addition. He joined from Bayern Munich in a deal of €50 million, including options. The prolific 33-year-old Araujo responded to his signing by saying (via Mundo Deportivo): “We know his quality; it is wonderful that he is among us.” Franck Kessie and Andreas Christensen have also joined Barcelona after their contracts with Chelsea and AC Milan, respectively, expired on free transfers. Raphinha has also been acquired from Leeds United. “It’s crucial that talented players arrive so we can progress as a team,” Araujo stated in reference to the other newcomers, Raphinha, Christensen, and Kessié. In addition, Ousmane Dembele extended his contract with the Blaugrana by two years when it expired on June 30. Regarding the Frenchman, Araujo continued, “We all wanted Dembele to stay at the club.” The rivalry for positions at center back has heightened with the signing of Christensen. Araujo, who has established himself as a leader for Barça at the back, also stated that it is always advantageous for the players when there is competition for the starting positions. The Uruguayan international remarked, “Competition is always good in football because it pushes you get the best out of yourself and the new players can contribute.” Jules Kounde, a defender for Sevilla, has also been strongly connected with a move to Barcelona. When asked about the prospect of teaming up with the Frenchman, Araujo responded, “Having the best at Barcelona is always a positive thing. Kounde is a wonderful player.” The previous Boston River defender was complimentary of Gerard Pique as well. The 23-year-old praised the seasoned defender and stated, “I would describe Piqué as a captain and a benchmark.” Araujo commented on the progress the team has achieved under Xavi, saying, “We have been expanding since Xavi joined. Maybe we had lost our playing style, but it seems to be coming back. The importance of preseason and the goals for the forthcoming season were also emphasized by Araujo, who said: “It’s crucial to have a strong preseason, at a tactical and physical level. It should be a pleasant season, in my opinion. The team needs to win championships, but we must make progress slowly.
