Gleison Bremer, a center back for Torino, has been widely believed to sign with Inter Milan for several weeks. Dude has essentially had personal terms agreed upon for months; all that is needed to complete the move in a center back market that is absolutely utterly fluid is for Inter to make a reasonable bid to Torino.
However, the middle of July has arrived, and Inter’s hesitation to make Torino the kind of offer it so desperately wants may very well come back to haunt them.
And it appears that Juventus is now in a position to maybe sign the best player from their cross-town competitor under the nose of their largest rival.
According to accounts in the Italian media from various sources, that is. Goal Romeo Agresti of Italy goes so far as to claim that Juventus is “becoming optimistic” that it can beat Inter in the race to recruit the 25-year-old Bremer, who transferred to Torino from Atlético Mineiro in 2018. According to Gianluca Di Marzio of Sky Italia, all of this after a meeting between Torino and Inter on Monday morning during which no deal was intended and the Nerazzurri were not willing to increase their offer.
Alfredo Pedulla of SportItalia claims that Juventus can provide Torino with something that Inter cannot at this time, namely cash up front in a straight purchase as opposed to Inter’s preferred arrangement of a loan with an obligation to buy. (You claim Beppe Marotta is performing a LWOTB? Surprise, I tell you.
Juventus is allegedly ready to make Torino an offer for Bremer that could be worth up to €40 million, with a base fee of €35 million and €5 million extra in add-ons.
The optimism in Juve’s home is growing as they prepare to overcome Inter in their matchups and go to Bremen. Juventus is becoming more confident that they will beat Inter to the Bremer. Goal @GoalItalia @goal July 18, 2022 — Romeo Agresti (@romeoagresti)
All of this results from the weekend’s news that Matthijs de Ligt’s much-discussed transfer to Bayern Munich was finalized. The young Dutchman has already completed his final workout at Continassa on Monday and is headed to Munich, with Juventus planning to finalize the €80 million transfer very soon.
Juve will now have a sudden flood of funds to spend and will need to try to replace their starting central defender. Juventus clearly sees an opening with Bremer to jump in and try to take away one of Inter’s main targets this summer given that some of the top possibilities are already off the market during a season in which there have been so many central defenders already on the move.
When Bremer heading to Inter seemed like a near-lock a week or two ago, it might not have even thought imaginable. Depending on who you believe, Bremer first agreed to personal terms with the 2020–21 Italian champions in February or March, according to reports in the Italian media. Since then, though, and especially lately, Inter’s refusal to put up more money for Bremer has obviously irritated Torino to the point where there’s now a real possibility that Juve will try to buy the large Brazilian defender before something else occurs with their de Ligt money.
It’s only one more twist in a crazy summer, right? Right!
