James Sands Backline Helps Rangers earn Champions League Qualifying First-leg Win

On Tuesday night, James Sands returned to the Rangers defense, assisting the club to a favorable first leg draw against PSV in UEFA Champions League qualifying.

Sands played 90 minutes for Giovanni Van Bronckhorst’s squad in a 2-2 draw with PSV at Ibrox Stadium, making his return after a weekend illness. In the early stages of the new season, the United States men’s national team defender partnered with Connor Goldson in the Rangers’ 4-3-3 formation. Sands completed 94% of his passes, made one tackle, and two interceptions as the Rangers prepare to travel to Eindhoven next week with much to play for. Rangers will play Hibernian in the Premiership on Saturday before traveling 700 miles to Eindhoven the following Wednesday.

In other English news, Josh Sargent scored his first goal of the season in Norwich City’s 1-0 win over Huddersfield Town at home. In Middlesbrough’s 1-1 draw with Stoke City, Zack Steffen made two saves. Auston Trusty played the full 90 minutes as Birmingham City drew 1-1 with Watford. Sunderland’s Lynden Gooch scored a spectacular goal in a 2-1 loss to Sheffield United.

Sam Vines and Josh Cohen both played 90 minutes for their clubs in Europe, while Konrad de la Fuente made his Olympiakos debut in Europa League qualifying.

Qualifying for the Champions League

James Sands started and played the entire first leg of Rangers’ 2-2 tie with PSV on Tuesday.

Rangers’ Malik Tillman started and played 71 minutes.

On Wednesday, Josh Cohen started, made TWO SAVES, and played 90 minutes in Maccabi Haifa’s 3-2 first-leg win over Red Star Belgrade.

PSV’s Richie Ledezma is OUT (Injury).

Qualifying for the Europa League

On Thursday, Henry Wingo started and played 90 minutes in Ferencvaros’ 4-0 first-leg win over Shamrock Rovers.

On Thursday, Konrad de la Fuente came off the bench and played 11 minutes in Olympiakos’ 1-1 first-leg draw with Apollon Limassol.

Malmo’s Romain Gall is OUT (Injury).

Qualifying for the Conference League

On Thursday, Sam Vines started and played 90 minutes in Royal Antwerp’s 1-1 first-leg draw with Istanbul Basaksehir.

On Thursday, Rokas Pukstas and Hajduk Split will pay a visit to Villarreal.



Lynden Gooch started and scored ONE GOAL in Sunderland’s 2-1 loss to Sheffield United on Wednesday.

In Norwich City’s 2-1 win over Huddersfield Town on Tuesday, Josh Sargent started, scored ONE GOAL, and played 68 minutes.

Huddersfield Town’s Duane Holmes started and played 69 minutes.

Auston Trusty started and played the entire 90-minute match against Watford on Tuesday.

Zack Steffen started, made TWO SAVES, and played 90 minutes in Middlesbrough’s 2-2 draw with Stoke City on Wednesday.

Matthew Hoppe dressed but did not play for Middlesbrough.

Ethan Horvath started, made ONE SAVE, and played 90 minutes in Luton Town’s 2-0 loss to Bristol City on Tuesday.

Matthew Olosunde did not dress in Preston North End’s 0-0 draw with Rotherham United on Tuesday.

Alan Sonora started and played 90 minutes in Independiente’s 1-1 draw with Huracan on Tuesday.

Joel Sonora and Velez Sarsfield visit Aldosivi on Thursday.
