Javier Hernandez has been left out of Mexico’s squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar

Javier Hernandez, a former Manchester United player, has played and scored for Mexico in three World Cups, but he has been dealt a blow ahead of the 2022 edition in Qatar. Carlos Vela and Javier Hernandez will not compete in Qatar. El Tri coach Tata Martino has confirmed that Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez will not play for Mexico in the 2022 World Cup. Hernandez played for his country at the World Cups in 2010, 2014, and 2018, scoring in all three tournaments, but has since fallen out of favor at the international level. He won his 109th cap in 2019, and has not played since leaving Europe for Major League Soccer in January 2020. Some have called for an international recall for the 34-year-old due to his performance for the LA Galaxy. However, neither he nor Carlos Vela, another MLS star and national team exile, will play in Qatar. “In the case of Chicharito, we are simply going with other forwards,” Martino told reporters ahead of Mexico’s games against Peru and Colombia. “We will try to select the 26 players who are most similar to our game. “We have two [forwards] who can play and two who can’t,” the ex-Barcelona manager explained. “What I like about us is that we don’t have too many players.” Four forwards aren’t going to Qatar, but as long as they make it difficult for me to choose, I’m happy. There will undoubtedly be discussion about who is left out, but the issue will be abundance rather than scarcity.” Meanwhile, Vela has not represented his country since the last World Cup. “Carlos Vela told me three and a half years ago that he preferred not to be summoned,” Martino said. Is Mexico making a mistake by not including Hernandez? Leave your thoughts in the comments section.

The former Arsenal forward is now a member of Los Angeles FC, alongside players such as Gareth Bale and Giorgio Chiellini. He was the top scorer in Major League Soccer in 2019 and has 11 MLS goals this season. Meanwhile, Hernandez leads the LA Galaxy in scoring this season with 15 goals. Depending on how well the Galaxy finish their regular season, the two compatriots could still meet in the postseason. The veteran, who scored 59 goals for Manchester United, stated over the summer that he would be willing to play for free for his former club if they came calling. “If United approached me, I’d say, ‘Yes, I’ll play for free.’ Of course, that’s something I’d do “”But I also want to be very respectful to my club,” he said. I’m playing very consistently, and my mental focus is on winning a championship with the LA Galaxy. If things happen in the future, they will happen – but in my mind, I am 100 percent with LA.” Continue reading
