Joe Lycett has told David Beckham that if he cancels his World Cup deal with Qatar, he will donate £10,000 to charities that support queer people in football, and that if he does not, he will shred the money.
Beckham has been heavily chastised for accepting a reported £10 million to be an ambassador for Qatar, a country where homosexuality is illegal, despite previously being regarded as a staunch supporter of the LGBTQ+ community.
Lycett sat at a desk with £10,000 in cash in front of him in an Instagram video posted on Sunday, November 13th, and said, “This is a message to David Beckham.” Along with Kim Woodburn and Monty Don, I regard you as gay icons. You’re the first Premier League footballer to shoot for gay magazines like Attitude, to openly discuss your gay fans, and to marry a Spice Girl, which is the gayest thing a human being can do.” But it’s now 2022. And you reportedly signed a £10 million contract with Qatar to be their ambassador during the FIFA World Cup.” Qatar was named one of the worst places in the world for gay people. Homosexuality is illegal and punishable by imprisonment or, in the case of Muslims, death.” Lycett informed the athlete that he has decided to give him “a choice” because he has “always talked about the power of football as a force for good.” “If you end your relationship with Qatar, I’ll donate this £10,000 of my own money to charities that support queer people in football,” he said. “However, if you do not, but midday next Sunday (20 November), I will throw this money into a shredder just before the World Cup opening ceremony and stream it live on a website I’ve registered called” He went on: “Not only will you lose the money, but your reputation as a gay icon will be shattered.” You’re going to make me commit a crime.” Even so, I believe I will get off easier than if I was caught whacking off a lad in Doha. “You have a choice. I eagerly await your response.” Beckham’s representatives have been contacted for comment.
