Lionel Messi scored, but Paris Saint-Germain had to work hard for a 2-1 win over Kawasaki Frontale in the first match of their preseason Japanese tour on Wednesday.
Messi, Neymar, and Kylian Mbappe all started in PSG manager Christophe Galtier’s first game in charge of his entire squad in front of 65,000 fans at Tokyo’s National Stadium.
Messi scored in the 32nd minute, but a much-changed PSG lineup in the second half could only manage one more goal through substitute Arnaud Kalimuendo.
Kawasaki, the J-League champions, equalized in the 84th minute when Kazuya Yamamura headed home unmarked, setting up a tense finish.
PSG will face Urawa Reds in Saitama on Saturday and Gamba Osaka in Osaka the following Monday as part of their Japanese tour.
PSG had the majority of the early possession, but Kawasaki had the first real chance.
A forward pass split the PSG defense, releasing striker Marcinho, who put the ball wide with the goal at his disposal.

After Messi had played Mbappe in on goal, Kawasaki goalkeeper Jung Song-ryong denied him a minute later.
Chanathip Songkrasin of Kawasaki, known as the “Thai Messi,” then cleared a shot from his Argentine namesake off the line to keep the game scoreless.
However, Messi broke through soon after, guiding a shot into the corner from just inside the box.
Neymar and Mbappe left at halftime, and Kawasaki forward Kei Chinen missed a golden opportunity to equalize in the 50th minute when he blazed over the bar.
Messi bowed out shortly after as Galthier, fresh from Nice, rang the changes.
Substitute Kalimuendo doubled PSG’s lead in the 58th minute, turning home Juan Bernat’s low cross, before Yamamura pulled one back with six minutes remaining.
