AFC Bournemouth vs. Preston North End – Football League World Championship

This article is part of Football League World’s ‘Terrace Talk’ series, which features personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits on breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings, and more… Chris Wilder has strengthened his Middlesbrough squad this summer, and he has expressed a desire to add more before the transfer window closes at the end of the month. Emil Riis of Preston North End is one player who could soon be joining the Riverside Stadium. Wilder identified the 24-year-old as a possible addition, according to our exclusive Football League World report, and Football Insider has now reported that the Lilywhites have set an asking price of £8 million. The forward had a strong season at Deepdale last year, scoring 16 league goals in 44 appearances, and with attacking options in need of reinforcement, it’s no surprise that Wilder is interested in him. The two clubs have yet to agree on a deal, but we asked FLW’s Middlesbrough fan pundit Dana Malt about the potential signing: “I think he would be a good investment signing.” He’s at an age where he’s still very much an asset, and he has room to improve even more, which is very, very appealing given that he’s coming off a 16-goal season in the Championship, 14 of which were non-penalty goals. I’m surprised by Preston’s reaction to him because they have a striker who has scored 20 goals in all competitions. Boro fans would give anything to have a striker who could score 20 goals regardless of who they were against. We saw that at the Riverside last season when we effectively gifted Preston three points and definitely gifted Riis the goal he scored but he still had to put it away and it was some finish. Then, of course, scoring the game-winning double against us in the season finale. The second goal, the chip over the keeper, over Luke Daniels, was really good and I think it demonstrated his quality, and if that’s a taste of what Emil Riis can offer, sign him up.” The Final Word: This would be a good summer signing for Boro. As Dana points out, this is a player who scored 20 goals in all competitions last season and would undoubtedly improve Wilder’s attacking options. At 24-years-old, he is still at an exciting age where he has room to develop his game and potentially contribute more not only with goals in his games but also from other positions on the field. It remains to be seen whether a deal will be struck following the player’s £8 million asking price. However, if Boro are able to complete this one, it’s not a bad piece of business at all. Source
