The 25-year-old failed to live up to expectations at Stamford Bridge, but he is optimistic about his chances with the Spanish second division club. After being released by Chelsea this summer, Zambian prospect Charly Musonda is excited to start a new chapter at Spanish second division side Levante. Despite huge prospects when he broke through the youth ranks, the 25-year-old attacking midfielder failed to live up to expectations at Chelsea, making just seven appearances for the club since 2012. Musonda, who has represented Belgium at youth level, has had three loan spells since 2015, with Real Betis, Celtic, and Eredivisie side Vitesse, but has failed to impress and has spent the last two seasons with Chelsea’s U23 side. He has, however, been given a chance to return to the top flight by the Segunda Division club after signing a two-year contract, and he hopes to turn his career around. “The new chapter begins, I never gave up working to one day be able to return to the field, and do what I love doing the most, years have passed and still I have faith, still I love football,” Musonda said about his transfer to Spain on social media.
“I still believe in hard work and the dedication that comes with pursuing my dreams.” “I’m excited to begin this new chapter with my new teammates and to fight together to achieve our goals this season in an amazing country that is so passionate about the game,” he added. Musonda began his career at Anderlecht’s youth setup at the age of 15 and was linked to a number of European giants including Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Manchester City before joining Chelsea in June 2012. He joined Chelsea with his two older brothers after the club agreed to pay Anderlecht a compensation fee before signing his professional contract the following year after already being a regular with the U18 side. He struggled to make the step up, and was loaned out to Betis, Celtic, and Vitesse before failing to advance his career due to a combination of injuries and poor form. Levante is his second club this summer, having left Belgian side Zulte Waregem after going missing just days after signing for them in July following impressive performances on trial. The club admitted to not knowing where he was after he failed to show up for training after accepting the offer. If he can resurrect his career in Spain, the midfielder could end up playing for Zambia in the near future, as he is eligible for a Chipolopolo call-up despite not having played for Belgium.
