The Gulf state was controversially awarded the tournament by the world football governing body back in 2010, and its first match is now just over three months away, having been moved from its previously consistent summer slot to winter due to the searing heat of the Middle East.
Lahm captained the German national team to World Cup victory in Brazil in 2014, lifting the trophy after Mario Gotze’s extra-time winner secured victory over Argentina, and now works as the tournament director for EURO 2024 for the German FA.
However, the 38-year-old says he has made the personal decision not to travel to Qatar.
‘I’m not part of the delegation, and I’m not interested in flying there as a fan,’ the former Bayern Munich full-back told Kicker in his home country. ‘I’d rather watch the tournament from home.’ Human rights should be prioritized when awarding a tournament. If a country is awarded a contract despite being one of the worst performers in this area, you begin to question the criteria used to make the decision. That should not happen in the future. Human rights, sustainability, and the size of the country appear to have played no role.’
Lahm also expects captain Manuel Neuer to openly discuss the issue while the team is in Qatar, saying, ‘As a player, you can’t get around it anymore.’
Qatar has a terrible human rights record, and according to a 2021 investigation by The Guardian, 6,500 migrant workers have died working on World Cup-related infrastructure projects due to unsafe working conditions.
According to Amnesty International, Qatar’s “authorities continue to curtail freedom of expression by using abusive laws to stifle critical voices,” while women and LGBTQ+ people face severe discrimination.
MORE: ‘Another Wembley rip-off!’ – According to German media, England cheated in the Euro 2022 final. MORE: ‘There is still blatant homophobia,’ say LGBT Qataris, who are ruled by fear.
