Raheem Sterling has left Manchester City for Chelsea in a £50 million transfer after being linked with a surprise return to Premier League powerhouses Liverpool in the past. Raheem Sterling, a star for Man City, has joined Chelsea. Before Chelsea rushed in to sign the Manchester City star, Raheem Sterling was said to be keen to returning to Liverpool. After announcing the end of his seven-year spell at the Etihad Stadium and as his move to Chelsea drew nearer, the England star promised to leave City “a man.” A confirmation of his transfer to the Blues is anticipated later on Wednesday, so the 27-year-old wrote a farewell message on social media. The Stamford Bridge team defeated a number of Premier League competitors, including Tottenham, Arsenal, and former club Liverpool. Sterling was open to returning to Anfield, though Jurgen Klopp’s team never made a formal approach for the winger, it has now been revealed. Sterling “wouldn’t have ruled out” moving to Liverpool, according to the Athletic. But when a switch fell through, Chelsea pounced and secured an astounding £50 million. After moving from Liverpool to City in 2015, Sterling won four league championships and 131 goals in 339 games in all competitions. Towards the close of the previous campaign, he was in and out of the City squad and did not start either leg of their defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League semifinals or the game that sealed the Premier League title against Aston Villa on the last day. After Gabriel Jesus completed a transfer to Arsenal, the long-serving City player is now the second to depart for London this summer. The two combined for 30 goals last season, but Pep Guardiola will be looking to make up for that loss after bringing in Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund earlier in the transfer window.

Chelsea’s first significant acquisition of the summer is Sterling, as manager Thomas Tuchel seeks to give his forward line, which is already strong, new life. The winger tweeted a thank-you message to City when he announced his departure, but he will undoubtedly be looking forward to the challenge at Stamford Bridge. He wrote on Twitter, “Seven seasons, eleven major trophies, a lifetime of memories.” “My respect for you could not be greater, to the coaching staff who have played a huge part in my development over the years, to my team-mates who have evolved into more than just people I play on the field with, to the backroom staff, to the office staff, to the fans who have relentlessly supported the team, and to everyone involved with Manchester City. What an adventure. I’m grateful for both the ups and the downs because it’s been through the downs that I’ve been able to stand in front of you as my strongest, most determined self. I moved to Manchester when I was 20 years old. I leave a man today. I appreciate your unending assistance. It has been an honor to wear the Manchester City jersey. Learn More
