Real Madrid are not Champions League champions this season, says Joe Cole.

Former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole believes Real Madrid will not retain their Champions League title. He believes that PSG, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Bayern Munich have much stronger squads than Los Blancos.
Real Madrid won their 14th Champions League title last season after defeating Eintracht Frankfurt (2-0) in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday night (August 10). They defeated PSG, Chelsea, and City on their way to the final against Liverpool, which they won 1-0 to claim their fourth Champions League title in seven years.

Cole, who did not expect Real Madrid to go the distance last season, believes the Whites lack the ability to defend their title this season.
Cole said on BT Sport following Madrid’s UEFA Super Cup victory: “You would think after backing against them in every round last year that I would have learned my lesson.” But I’d still rank PSG, Man City, Liverpool, and Bayern Munich ahead of them.

“I still believe there are four teams more capable of winning the Champions League next year than Real.” You must remember that they won the Champions League, and you must give them enormous credit. They are all world-class players led by a world-class manager.”
“But think of all the stars that had to align for them to do that… in the game against Chelsea, against Man City, even in the final when [Thibaut] Courtois had to have the game of his career,” he added.

Lionel Messi’s form could boost PSG’s chances in the Champions League.
Lionel Messi scored five Champions League goals in seven appearances for PSG last season. All of his goals, however, came during the group stage.

Messi’s performance against Real Madrid in the Round of 16 was underwhelming, prompting PSG fans to boo the Argentine in a subsequent league home game.

Messi has started the 2022-23 season with renewed ambition and energy. He was the Parisians’ standout performer in their Ligue 1 opener against Clermont Foot on Saturday (August 6), scoring twice and providing an assist in a 5-1 win. If he can bring the same scorching form to Europe, Paris Saint-Germain will undoubtedly be among the favorites to reach the final in June.
