Joan Laporta claims that Robert Lewandowski was always a priority target for Barcelona this summer, but stops short of claiming that the Catalans did not pursue Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo, 37, has returned to Carrington following his absence from the pre-season tour. In the midst of speculation about his Manchester United future, he cited family obligations as the reason for his absence. Ronaldo has been linked with several elite clubs, and the five-time Ballon d’Or winner wishes to leave. However, the club insists that Ronaldo will not be sold, and crunch talks were held on Tuesday morning between the player, super agent Jorge Mendes, and key figures from United, including manager Erik ten Hag. United is deliberating. Transfer of Sesko Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Chelsea have all ruled out a move for Ronaldo, while PSG are said to have turned down the opportunity to sign him. Ronaldo also turned down a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia, fueling speculation about his future. The most contentious rumour, however, was Barcelona’s ‘interest’ in a player who spent nine glittering years with bitter rivals Real Madrid. But was it ever planned? Barcelona president Laporta told CBS Sports about the Portugal captain: “This type of story, however, is all part of the summer window process. There is always a lot of news.” But the truth is that we wanted Lewandowski. Jorge Mendes and I get along fantastically. I’ve known him for quite some time. He is one of the best player agents in the business. He knows how to do his job, and I admire him for it.” Laporta continued: “In this case, we chose Lewandowski because we knew he was critical to our success. This is the truth. The other [Ronaldo] topic is just part of football’s ‘little history.’ It’s a lovely story, but you’ll always hear conflicting reports about it “Ronaldo is a fantastic professional who is still in great shape. He’s a very ambitious and competitive player, and I’m sure he has a lot of options. He is still a Manchester United player, a club that I hold in high regard. His future is not my concern. Manchester United and Cristiano Ronaldo are involved.” Get your copy of the final official programme for the Women’s Euros here >>> ADDITIONAL READING: The most recent Manchester United transfer rumors Ronaldo has announced a return date for United.
