The billionaire who wants to buy Manchester United?

The richest man in the United Kingdom has expressed an interest in purchasing Manchester United, but it is questionable whether he is the knight in shining armor that many of the club’s fans believe he is. Loading Video Unavailable video Glazers out? – Manchester United’s takeover speculation heats up If the Glazers wanted to know – or even cared – how unpopular they are among a large number of Manchester United supporters, they should have looked at social media’s reaction to Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s apparent interest in purchasing the club. Overall, it was a positive experience. This is the same man who once threatened to close a Scottish petrochemicals plant, threatening over a thousand jobs, unless the trade union representing the employees agreed to job cuts, a wage freeze, harsher redundancy terms, and the elimination of the final salary pension scheme. Our Jim appears to be a people’s man. The idea that he would give commoners a say in how the club is run seems far-fetched. But he is a die-hard Manchester United fan, so much so that he recently attempted to buy Chelsea. “I’m a Chelsea season ticket holder and have been for years, though I’m really a Manchester United fan,” he explained. And he appears to be a billionaire of principle. He was a staunch Brexit supporter who once promised to build an automotive factory in Wales, only to back out in favor of a site in France. Ratcliffe stated in 2015 that “the UK would be perfectly successful as a standalone country.” That’s working out nicely. And, because Ratcliffe is such a patriot, he increased his ties to Monaco, saving himself billions in tax payments. Unlike some other billionaires who have owned football clubs, Ratcliffe is not afraid of publicity, as evidenced by his spokesperson’s statement that he would be interested in purchasing Manchester United. He would not be alone in this regard, for sure. The notion that those who talk about it don’t get it done, while those who don’t talk about it do, is not always correct. Ratcliffe has purchased football clubs in France and Switzerland, funded an America’s Cup sailing challenge, is a lead partner in the Mercedes Formula One team, and, of course, purchased Team Sky. He can clearly put his money where his mouth is. EXPRESS YOURSELF! Would Ratcliffe outperform the Glazers at Manchester United? Tell us in the comments section.

Manchester United fans plan to demonstrate against the Glazers at next Monday’s Premier League match against Liverpool.

However, if the Glazers do decide to sell, Ratcliffe will be up against some stiff competition. Manchester United may be bad on the field right now, but they are still a commercial behemoth and a sporting institution with incredible global appeal. Offers would come from all over. Ratcliffe is also known for never paying too much for anything, and given the allure of Manchester United, the Glazers would demand significantly more than the club’s official valuation (just over $2.2 billion according to share prices in New York on Thursday). Overall, a Ratcliffe takeover appears unlikely. But the fact that such a remote possibility has been lauded as a fantasy scenario tells you everything you need to know about how unbearable the Glazer regime has finally become. And whether it’s Ratcliffe or not, they’ll sell up if they have a smidgeon of self-awareness and decency. Continue Reading
