The Toronto Blue Jays’ top prospects for the 2019 season

2:48 AM UTC TORONTO, ONTARIO – The Blue Jays’ farm system has evolved in the years since Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette made their debuts, ushering in a new era of baseball in Toronto. The 2021 trade for José Berros cost the Blue Jays some top-tier talent in Austin Martin and Simeon Woods Richardson, who were then ranked Nos. 2 and 4 in the system, but the Blue Jays have done more of their building since then through free agency or lower-level deals. They dealt then-No. 4 prospect Jordan Groshans to the Marlins for relievers Zach Pop and Anthony Bass at the trade deadline, but Groshans was set to drop in the midseason re-rank after a rough start to the season. While some of Toronto’s pitching is young, the organization still has some top-tier talent with elite potential. This is led by No. 1 prospect Gabriel Moreno, one of the game’s best young catchers, and No. 2 prospect Ricky Tiedemann, the left-hander whose value has skyrocketed in ’22 with one of the best seasons of any Minor League pitcher. Following the Deadline and MLB Draft, here is how the Blue Jays’ system looks in the future, with updated rankings: Here are the Blue Jays’ top prospects: Here are the players whose positions have changed the most since the preseason list: Gabriel Martinez (OF) (NR | NR | NR | NR | NR | NR | NR | NR | NR | NR | — Martinez impressed in Spring Training and had a strong start with Low-A Dunedin, hitting.288 with 11 home runs and an.832 OPS in 65 games. He was recently promoted to High-A. Vancouver, and at only 20 years old, represents a new wave of outfield talent in the Blue Jays system, which has struggled to develop in recent years. Martinez will present an intriguing decision this offseason, as he must be added to the 40-man roster in order to avoid being exposed in the Rule 5 Draft. Leo Jimenez, SS/2B, Fall (Preseason: 5 | Midseason: 17) — Infielder Manuel Beltre and right-hander Irv Carter both fell 12 spots, but Jimenez was the highest-ranked of the group, starting the season at No. 5. With High-A Vancouver, the 21-year-old has hit.228 while also increasing his power with six home runs. Jimenez, on the other hand, already has a spot on Toronto’s 40-man roster to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft, so he’s still in good shape to earn a spot in the coming years and should see a late-season promotion for a new challenge. Outside of the organization, the following players have been added to the Top 30: LHP Brandon Barriera (Draft, Rd. 1) Tucker Toman (SS/3B) (Draft, Rd. 2 Compensatory) Josh Kasevich (SS) (Draft, Rd. 2) Cade Doughty, second base (Draft, Rd. 2 Compensatory) Alex De Jesus (3B/SS) (Trade, Dodgers) Alan Roden, 1B, 29 (Draft, Rd. 3) When both Danny Jansen and Alejandro Kirk have been healthy this season, Toronto has gone with them as its catching options, making it difficult for Moreno to stick despite his MLB readiness. The 22-year-old backstop appeared in 18 games for the big club this summer, hitting.276/.300/.293 before the Jays decided it would be better for him to get everyday at-bats. Even if his power is a bit lacking in 2022, Moreno’s contact rate and impressive athleticism behind the plate would be helpful for a final playoff push should Jansen or Kirk get hurt or if the Jays want to carry three catchers at any point. For future tools, players are graded on a 20-80 scouting scale: 20-30 is well below average, 40 is well below average, 50 is average, 60 is above average, and 70-80 is well above average. The players in parentheses are all in the same grade. Gabriel Moreno has 60 hits. Orelvis Martinez has a power rating of 60. Dasan Brown (80 yards) Alex De Jesus (Arm: 65) Dasan Brown (field: 60) Yosver Zulueta has a fastball rating of 70. Curveball: 55 — Sem Robberse (Yosver Zulueta, C.J. Van Eyk) Yosver Zulueta, Slider 55 (Ricky Tiedemann, Brandon Barriera, Hayden Juenger, Dahian Santos, Irv Carter) Changeup: 65 — Adrian Hernandez Control: 55 — Brandon Barriera
